Land use maps from the Dong Cao catchment (Vietnam)
“Brachiaria”: Plantation of Brachiaria ruziziensis for fodder.
“Cassava”: Continuous cultivation of cassava (Manihot utilissima) in annual cycles, manually tilled, frequently weeded. Despite the supply of mineral fertilizers, this cultivation has been abandoned due to plummeting yields. Enormous soil losses.
“Maize”: Continuous cultivation of maize (Zea mays L.) with hand tillage, fertilizer application.
“Fallow”: Spontaneous regrowth of vegetation on abandoned farmland. Under the Dong Cao soil/climate conditions succession back to the original forest is to be expected. Depending on local site history, the frequency and the intensity of past agricultural activities, the current impact of grazing and passing of livestock, and the attempts of tree planting, the succession can be blocked or occurs very slowly.
“Planted forest”: Several tree plantations have been attempted in the Dong Cao catchment including Eucalyptus sp., Vernicia montana, and Acacia mangium. With the exception of Acacia mangium, these plantations have been cut or abandoned, and replaced by a spontaneous forest vegetation.
“Pasture”: degraded grassland with daily grazing of cattle and buffalos.
“Settlement”: A few houses have been built in 2017.
