VPRS 18111 Staff Register

The Staff Register is a summary record documenting the employment details of all employees at Ballarat Mental Hospital for the period covered by the registers.Information recorded in the registers includes name, date of birth, date appointed, office (position) held, salary, insurance policy information, and remarks about any matter to do with the employee's employment circumstances.Appointments are recorded in black ink and separations in red ink. The same applies to the index at the front of the register which provides a reference by surname of employee to folio numbers within the register where information relevant to the employee is recorded. The practice of recording in red ink was used sparingly in Unit 2.The first register includes the staffing establishment at the Mental Hospital and Receiving House, Ballarat, as approved by the Department of Mental Hygiene. It is dated 19/5/1941.It appears that Unit 1 was missing for a period between 1900 and 1912. A new register was created (Unit 2). Its last entry was created on 1 March 1912. Entries recommenced in Unit 1 on that date. Entries from Unit 2 were entered into Unit 1 for the missing period but not in any particular order.There is a name index at the beginning of each register with reference to the relevant page(s) for the particular employee.
