Adopting theories and methodologies from geoscience, forestry, biology, ecology and other relevant disciplines, a comprehensive scientific expedition was carried out for 18 key nature reserves spanning 6 biogeographical regions in Yunnan Province. The expedition covers 30 thematic areas including geology, geomorphology, climate, hydrology, soil, vegetation, flora, forest resources, rare and endangered protected flora and fauna, mosses, ferns, bamboos, resource plants, macrofungi, mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish, insects, community economy, social forestry, eco-tourism, history/ethnicity/culture, reserve construction/management, biodiversity assessment and comprehensive reviews, etc. Additionally, the biodiversity characteristics of Yunnan's nature reserves discovered during the expedition were summarized and analyzed. Key Features - Fundamentality and Originality: Yunnan's nature reserves preserve over 80% of the province's biodiversity resources. Based on the baseline resource survey, a complete set of basic information from species, communities to ecosystems has been established. - Durability and Extensiveness: The project was launched in the early 1980s and took 30 years to complete, covering half of the nature reserves in Yunnan that have completed comprehensive scientific expeditions. - Representativeness and Typicality: The surveyed reserves include various types such as forest ecosystems, dry-hot valleys and wildlife habitats, representing different biogeographical regions and important ecosystems in Yunnan. - Comprehensiveness and Interdisciplinarity: The expedition applied principles and methodologies from multiple disciplines including geoscience, biology, ecology, forestry and humanities and social sciences, involving 30 thematic topics. Technical and Economic Indicators: The 18 reserves included in the declared achievement cover a total area of 1.1 million hectares, accounting for 54% of the area of similar scientific expedition projects in Yunnan. Over 12,700 species of higher plants were identified, accounting for 77% of Yunnan's total higher plant species; over 1,550 species of vertebrates were documented, accounting for 79% of Yunnan's total vertebrate species. Furthermore, 25 new species, 26 new national records in China and more than 90 new recorded genera and species in Yunnan were discovered, as well as 12 new forest types. Two specifications and five standards were compiled, 7 related monographs were published, 18 comprehensive expedition reports were compiled, and 172 academic papers were published, forming a complete system of expedition content and methodologies.
