The collection of the National Herbarium of New South Wales consists of around 1.425 million plant specimens. Over half are from within Australia. It is the largest collection in the world of the plants of New South Wales. The collection consists of plant specimens gathered by staff, as well as specimens from donations and exchange with other herbaria in Australia and overseas.
The collection is used for research, reference and documenting the flora of Australia, especially New South Wales flora.
The fungi from NSW has been transferred to the New South Wales Plant Pathology Herbarium (DAR).
The Australian and international wood collection from the former State Forests of New South Wales Herbarium (NSWF) have been transferred to NSW.
