The Asiatic Lion exists as a single isolated population in India's Gujurat State [IUCN]. The population of lions in Gir forests has gone up by nearly 14 per cent in last five years, with the latest census revealing the presence of 411 of the big cats as compared to 359 in the 2005 census [Forest Department, Government of Gujarat]. The aim of this study was to sequence the mitochondrial genome of Asiatic Lion. This study might have relevance in the field of evolutionary biology, conservation, breeding and biotechnology.
