While the ecological and evolutionary significance of parental behavior is well recognized, underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. To identify neuronal types active during parental care we sequences total mRNA and mRNA specifically from active neurons (isolated using phosphoTRAP) from the medial pallium (homolog of the mammalian hippocampus) and preoptic area of tadpole-transporting versus non-transporting male Dendrobates tinctorius poison frogs.
