Queensland Museum collections have a strong focus on marine invertebrates as the dominant components of our vast reef and seabed faunas and sponges (Porifera) are an important contributor to these.
The collection is a basis for higher systematics revisions; genetic studies; modelling and interpreting patterns across regional faunas; and phylogeny of seamount faunas. Features are:
* specimens of over 5,600 nominal species, being amongst the largest in the southern hemisphere;
* purpose-collected material during the last two decades in collaboration with the marine natural products chemistry industry, and tested for bioactive compounds of potential interest to the pharmaceutical industry (available through nature bank http://www.nature-bank.com.au/);
* a large proportion genetically sequenced (http://www.spongebarcoding.org/);
* a core dataset for SpongeMaps, a collaborative online platform to standardise sponge identification methodology (http://www.spongemaps.org/#!home/mainPage).
