High prevalence of co-infecting enteropathogens in alleged rotavirus vaccine breakthrough cases

In this study, we investigated the fully Rotarix vaccinated infants that were rotavirus-positive in the post-vaccine era in Belgium. The hypothesis was that many cases of gastroenteritis that are regarded as vaccine breakthrough might actually be due to alternative enteropathogens. The genotype constellations of rotavirus genomes in alleged breakthrough cases were also investigated to assess the possibility of vaccine escape mutants.
