Full interpretation of the aberrant characters of the dinoflagellate nucleus, such as increase in size, loss of bulk nucleosomal DNA packaging by histones and permanent condensation of chromosomes, requires better understanding of the content and organizationof the genome. While the considerable size of dinoflagellate genomes has been a major obstacle to generating a complete genomic sequence, considerable advances in sequencing technology now make this possible. Further, Hematodinium has amongst the smallest of dinoflagellate genomes, but still represents the major changes of the dinokaryotic state. Therefore Hematodinium is an ideal candidate dinoflagellate for genomic characterization. These data will also allow exhaustive identification of all histone sequences, including variants, and directly contribute to identifying the binding sites within the genome of histones and potentially DVNPs.
