Il "viaggio" della metafora.

The 'journey' of the metaphor is understood in two ways: 1) the journey of metaphor as a rhetorical figure; 2) the journey of metaphor over time, up to our days. As regards the first aspect, it is observed that Aristotle derives the me μεταφορά from the original one of «transport»; therefore the metaphor originally indicates the «transport» of a meaning from one term to another related to it. However Aristotle also underlines another important feature of this figure: the metaphor as a source of knowledge. As regards the second aspect, it is examined how the metaphor is present in contemporary speaking, in ordinary language and in journalism, and numerous examples are taken from newspaper articles on different subjects such as sport and politics. It can be deduced that the metaphor is not a speach ornament, but the manifestation of a way of thinking through images, as claimed by G. Vico, P. M. Bertinetto and M. Black.
