We monitored nitrogen uptake with biofilms by using a set of flumes with contrasting flow heterogeneity. In addition to characterizing flow regimes, we measured the nitrogen uptake with injection of 15N injection experiments. We also characterized the diversity and microbial community structures of the corresponding biofilms. Our results clearly demonstrate that the hydraulic controls on biofilm structure and nitrogen uptake.
