Prior to its relaunch as a gaming website, Friendster was originally a social networking site where users could establish friendship connections. The Friendster social network also allowed users to form groups, which other members could then join. The Friendster dataset consists of real communities (user-defined groups) and social networks constructed as induced subgraphs from nodes that either belong to at least one community or are connected to other nodes belonging to at least one community.
