Disaster Assistance Centers (DAC) are temporary locations where impacted survivors can go for limited mass care services and information on available government programs available. They are operational within 24 to 96 hours following a disaster and are considered a joint operation between county, non-governmental organizations, and private businesses. Depending on the magnitude of the disaster and the location they may also include the provision of other disaster related services or resources such as the distribution of food and water, comfort items, crisis counseling and family reunification. The DAC concept is adaptable to the severity and magnitude of the disaster. Smaller disasters which affect a small segment of the population may not warrant the need to open a DAC.
