PIWIs are best known as TE-silencing in germline cells among the animal kingdom. Recently, it has been reported that piwi family genes are also expressed in multi-/pluri-potent stem cells in invertebrate, including planarians. In this study, by using the freshwater planarian, Dugesia japonica, we tried to identify novel targets of a nuclear PIWI (DjPiwiB) and reveal function of DjPiwiB in stem cell regulation.
