Code-switching in the Tertiary-level ‘English as a Foreign Language’ Classroom: Data from Bangladesh

This dataset was collected through recording of real-time conversations of English language learners pursuing higher education, in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms in Bangladesh. The aim was to quantify the frequency, length, and category of code-switching that exist in the university classrooms. The conversations were recorded and then transcribed into texts and switched codes (English-Bengali) were shifted to tables. The participants were 18-21 years old studying at private universities located in Dhaka, the capital city of the country. This set of data helps to conduct research on applied linguistics and English language teaching. The raw data presented in this article can enable policymakers and teachers to review their policies and strategies regarding English language teaching in higher educational institutes in Bangladesh and other countries that share similar contexts.
