The survey examines the local election in 1978 with special reference to the conditions of local democracy. The survey deals with the attitudes of the Danish population to their local municipality and to municipal authorities as well as their participation and interest in local elections. #The survey also attempts to compare attitudes to national politics (i.e. the Government and the Folketing) with attitudes to local politics (local councils, etc.). But throughout the survey the main emphasis has been on local politics. # #The survey deals with the following issues: # # 1) The local election in 1978. # 2) The respondent's knowledge of the political composition of # local councils/city councils. # 3) Political interest. # 4) Political information in various media, printed and elec- # tronic. # 5) Participation in meetings concerning, and interest in, speci- # fic political issues. # 6) Contact with municipal authorities in connection with various # cases and an assessment of this contact regarding tax return, # building cases, economic activities, children's institutions, # care of elderly people and public assistance. # 7) Assessment of municipal services (expenditure) regarding # schools, children's institutions, care of elderly people, # public assistance, sports facilities, libraries, road # safety, public transport and slum clearance. # 8) Various statements concerning local and national politics, # e.g. an assessment of the politicians, the situation of the # voters, approval of the 'administration' and an assessment # of 'public thriftlessness'. # 9) Various statements concerning local politics, e.g. appoint- # ment of teachers, books at the libraries, participant de- # mocracy, decentralization and so-called illegal actions. #10) Political attitudes: # Placing on a right-left scale, party preference, vote at the # local elections in 1974 and 1978 and vote at the general # election in 1977. #11) Membership of and active involvement in political parties and # associations: nomination and election for political orga- # nizations and membership of and active involvement # in political parties, trade unions, trade organizations, # spare time organizations and other organizations and move- # ments. #12) Attempts at influencing public opinion or the local poli- # ticians, the means used in such cases and an assessment of # the reaction of the municipal authorities to the views # presented as well as interest in the following local poli- # tical issues: schools, children's institutions, spare time # activities, cultural activities, traffic conditions, care # of elderly people and town planning. #13) Background variables: # Education and occupation of the respondent, the respondent's # spouse/cohabitant or previous bread-winner; the # respondent's income; and a detailed description of the re- # spondent's nearest relations
