This volume contains half-yearly examination results and is arranged chronologically. Pupils are listed in classes with their ages. The teacher's name is also given and the date at which they took control of the class. Student marks are recorded for the following subjects; reading, writing, spelling, composition, and arithmetic.Columns are provided to calculate total marks and place in grade, whilst space is provided for remarks on individual pupils and to illustrate the types of questions set in the exams.The inside cover of the volume also has a list of guidelines for teachers to follow when they are administering examinations. The list includes the following stipulations; all classes must have half-yearly examinations and these exams must be finished by June and November respectively; if possible, the nature of the test and the questions should be recorded; the names of pupils should be arranged alphabetically; those pupils absent from an examination should be tested as soon as possible; the record should be signed by both the examiner and the class teacher.This list of directives also stresses the importance of the pupil&'s written work above all else. Significantly, the record of results is described as being of great importance to both the teacher and the inspector.
