Vanini's fame was initially generated by his informers who designed around him an aura of judgements and prejudices against his rational investigation aimed towards the infinite spaces of the liberty of philosophizing, sometimes representing him as an unrepentant heretic, sometimes as an unyielding atheist. Thus different images of the character result which are produced by the perception of time and by the dominant philosophies over the centuries.
