Literature search method This systematic review was done using Web of Science by Thomson Reuter in November 2015. Web of Science is an online searching engine with the access to a large databases of cross-disciplinary research. The search of related published articles was conducted using the terms “Alzheimer’s disease AND diagnosis* AND detect* AND amyloid plaques*”, with the research domain refined in science technology. The research area was also refined in neuroscience neurology, radiology nuclear medicine medical imagining, biochemistry molecular biology, pathology, and geriatrics gerontology. After this, a total of 55 published articles were shown. All articles’ title and abstract were scanned manually for relevance. Review articles, comparative analysis, and those with irrelevant content or without available abstract were excluded, leaving a total of 30 articles in examine. A complete PRISMA flow diagram was attached in the appendix with detailed process in paper selection. Analysis of the literature Literatures were classified according to the diagnostic methods (CSF analysis, PET scan and MRI), experimental subjects (AD patient/ mild cognitive impairment patients/ cognitively healthy individuals, AD transgenic mice/ non-transgenic mice), imaging agents (different kinds of nanoparticles), measurements (amyloid plaques deposition, tangles, tau protein, T2 relaxation time, white matter and basal forebrain volume), and whether the techniques were performed in vivo or ex vivo.
