Theworldfacesunprecedentedglobalchallengesrelatedtodepletingnaturalresources,pollution,climatechange,cleanwater,andpoverty.Theseproblemsaredirectlylinkedtothephysicalcharacteristicsofourcurrenttechnologybaseforproducingenergyandmaterialproducts.Deepandpervasivechangesinthistechnologybasecanaddresstheseglobalproblemsattheirmostfundamental,physicallevel,bychangingboththeproductsandthemeansofproductionusedby21stcenturycivilization.Thekeydevelopmentisadvanced,atomicallyprecisemanufacturing(APM).Thisreportexaminesthepotentialfornanotechnologytoenabledeeplytransformativeproductiontechnologiesthatcanbedevelopedthroughaseriesofadvancesthatbuildoncurrentnanotechnologyresearch.Thereporthasfivesections:1.NanotechnologyandglobalchallengeThefirstsectiondiscussesthebasicsofadvanced,atomicallyprecisenanotechnologyandexplainshowcurrentandfuturesolutionscanhelpaddressglobalchallenges.Keyconceptsarepresentedanddifferentkindsofnanotechnologyarediscussedandcompared.2.ThebirthofNanotechnologyThesecondsectiondiscussesthedevelopmentofnanotechnology,fromthefirstvisionfiftyyearsago,expandingviaascientificapproachtoatomicallyprecisemanufacturingthirtyyearsago,initialdemonstrationsofprincipletwentyyearsago,tothelastdecadeofofacceleratingsuccessindevelopingkeyenablingtechnologies.Theimportantroleofemergingcountriesisdiscussed,withChinaasaleadingexample,togetherwithanoverviewofthecontrastbetweenthepromiseandtheresultstodate.3.DeliveryoftransformativenanotechnologiesHerethedifferentaspectsofAPMthatareneededtoenablebreakthroughadvancesinproductivetechnologiesarediscussed.Thenecessarytechnologybasecanbedevelopedthroughaseriesofcoordinatedadvancesalongstrategicallychosenlinesofresearch.4.AcceleratingprogresstowardadvancednanotechnologiesThissectiondiscussesresearchinitiativesthatcanenableandsupportadvancednanotechnology,onpathsleadingtoAPM,includingintegratedcross-disciplinaryresearchandIdentificationofhigh-valueapplicationsandtheirrequirements.5.PossiblenextstepsThefinalsectionprovidesashortsummaryoftheopportunitiesandthepossibilitiestoaddressinstitutionalchallengesofplanning,resourceallocation,evaluation,transparency,andcollaborationasnanotechnologymovesintoitsnextphaseofdevelopment:nanosystemsengineering.
