Height above the nearest drainage (HAND) dataset for eighteen drainage thresholds

Attributes extracted from Digital Elevation Models (DEM) have been used to describe topographic features and are useful to understand physical and biological process on the terrain surface. For a better mapping of the hydrological conditions of the terrain we applied the Height Above the Nearest Surface (HAND) algorithm to the DEM of the Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) over a large area between the Rives Purus and Madeira, in Central Amazonia. The HAND application results in a new DEM where the pixel values represent the vertical distance of the terrain to the nearest drainage. We used eighteen drainage thresholds on the calculation of the vertical distance to the nearest drainage as an attempt to cover the heterogeneity of hydrological conditions found in the area.
