Cable bacteria in Kristineberg Bay and Koljo Fjord

"This study focused on the presence of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in two areas on the West Coast of Sweden; Kristineberg Bay and Koljo Fjord. In addition to gene expression, abundance, taxonomy, and phylogenetic data were obtained using metatranscriptomics. This study revealed the unusual presence of filamentous sulfide oxidizers, so-called cable bacteria (Candidatus Electrothrix), which conduct electrons through internal wires over centimeter-scale distances in the euxinic Koljo Fjord, particularly in deep anoxic layers (20-32 cm)."
