To investigate the growth characteristics of nitrogen-fixing functional strains and explore the principle of matching appropriate strains to their suitable habitats, this study was conducted. The results show that a total of 103 strains carrying the nifH gene were detected. The optimal growth conditions for these strains are 28°C and pH 7. The suitable growth temperatures for all strains are 20°C, 28°C and 37°C, and the suitable pH values for substantial growth of most strains are 4, 5, 7 and 8. For low-temperature and alkaline soil environments, the applicable strain is 6003; for high-temperature and alkaline soil environments, the applicable strains include 09ul27, 1010, 2024, 2029, 7002, lk2-1c(2) and zk3-1; strains suitable for growth in both acidic and alkaline soils are 102 and 2025. Based on the different growth characteristics of the bacterial communities, non-hierarchical clustering was performed on all strains, and the optimal classification into 9 categories was obtained using the SSI algorithm. Among them, Class 5 and Class 7 exclusively belong to the genus Burkholderia, Class 2 mostly comprises strains from the genus Bacillus, and no obvious clustering phenomenon was observed for bacterial genera in the remaining categories. Additionally, there was no significant correlation between the classification based on growth conditions and the preliminary identification classification of the strains. [Conclusion] The suitable growth environments for nitrogen-fixing functional strains are relatively consistent, with the most optimal growth conditions being 28°C and pH 7. Through cluster analysis of growth conditions and 16S rDNA identification and comparison of all strains, it is concluded that the growth characteristics of the strains are not fully correlated with their biological characteristics.
