Melanaphis sacchari (Zehntner) is a pest of agricultural importance due to its ability to destroy Sorghum bicolor crops. It is known that associations with endosymbiotic bacteria play a vital role in aphid fitness and are influenced by such aspects as geography and the association with the host plant. We determined the composition of the microbiota of M. sacchari, extracting the DNA from the gut of adult individuals (n = 60) and sequencing the 16s rRNA gene by next generation sequencing (Ion TorrentTM).
