Comparative spectral analysis of 10 paintings sonified with two systems: the original museum pipeline and the Argira v23 deterministic system. Key finding: hue_std (chromatic variance) predicts residual spectral roughness in the Argira system with r = 0.8477 (n = 10, r² = 0.718). This correlation was not explicitly designed; it emerged from the mathematical structure of the sonification pipeline. Pictorial texture (sfumato, flat color, impasto, hard chromatic transitions) appears to translate automatically into acoustic roughness without being encoded as an explicit target parameter. Discovery method: the relationship was identified through comparative spectral analysis between the original mono pipeline and the new Argira v23 stereo implementation. Systematic differences in high-frequency spectral energy revealed the emergent pattern. Method: spectral energy measured by frequency bands (0–2 kHz, 2–5 kHz, 5–8 kHz, >8 kHz). Residual spectral roughness defined as energy above 8 kHz as percentage of total spectral energy. hue_std values obtained from dataset v17. Paintings analyzed: Malevich, Rembrandt, Botticelli, Hopper, Monet, Vermeer, Dalí, Van Gogh, Degas, Kandinsky. Note: Vermeer appears as an outlier (hue_std = 0.212, residual roughness = 2.0%), consistent with the perceptual smoothness of the painting and potentially related to image resolution and subpixel chromatic transitions in the dataset. This dataset documents a second correlation between hue_std and residual spectral roughness (r=0.8477, r²=0.718, n=10) that was not explicitly designed, it emerged from comparative spectral analysis between the original mono pipeline and the Argira v23 stereo implementation. Its methodological significance extends beyond the isolated finding:Argira's primary correlation (hue_std → Ds, r=0.9289, N=47) could be challenged as circular — the algorithm was built so that chromatic variance would predict sonic complexity, meaning the high correlation might reflect design rather than a real property of the image. The emergent correlation in this dataset refutes that objection. Residual spectral roughness is not a system parameter it is a physical consequence of harmonic interactions when the spectrum is dense. Nobody programmed it. It appeared on its own. That hue_std predicts both Ds (by design) and spectral roughness (by emergence) through two mathematically independent paths means that the correspondence between chromatic structure and acoustic structure is a property of the image, not a decision of the algorithm. Open question: Is acoustic roughness a universal property of pictorial texture, independent of the sonification method? The data suggest yes. Vermeer as an outlier is consistent with this hypothesis, his glazing technique produces chromatic transitions fundamentally different from Van Gogh's impasto or Kandinsky's saturated planes. Future work: Replicate the analysis on the full dataset (N=47) and with alternative sonification algorithms to determine whether the hue_std → spectral roughness correlation is robust to method or specific to Argira.
