This sequencing project was undertaken to better understand the Plasmodium falciparum var diversity in clinical isolates from pediatric cerebral malaria (CM) patients. Specifically, we wanted to determine if there are common var types in patients with brain swelling, a symptom that is a major risk factor for death. The identification of similar var types expressed by parasites from brain swelling cases might implicate specific var genes in the mechanism of brain swelling in pediatric CM pathogenesis.
