This study of students in years 10 and 11 in Melbourne and Launceston schools aims to gauge the effect of the new high school system of junior and senior high schools which has been introduced since the last survey was conducted in 1972. The survey seeks to establish adolescent perceptions of the quality of their school experience as well as identifying the needs of students attending the post-compulsory years of secondary education. Topics covered include attitudes to: school organisation, including the new high school arrangements; curriculum; examinations; teachers; discipline, including corporal punishment; specific subject interests. Other variables include: education and career plans; educational and income backgrounds; ethnicity; parental occupations and incomes; parental education levels; religious observance; family composition; rating of scholastic ability.
