This dataset contains shipboard FastCTD (FCTD) and moored Wirewalker observations collected during the first Turbulence in La Jolla Canyon (TLC) experiment conducted offshore of Scripps Institution of Oceanography in October 2023. The experiment was designed to quantify upwelling, diapycnal mixing, and along-canyon transport in a steep, supercritical submarine canyon using a controlled fluorescent dye release.
Rhodamine dye was released near 85 m depth at the head of La Jolla Canyon and tracked for approximately three days using repeated along-canyon FastCTD sections and a moored Wirewalker equipped with CTD, fluorometer, microstructure (EPSI), and acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) instrumentation.
The dataset includes hydrographic profiles (temperature, salinity, density), velocity measurements, microstructure-derived turbulence quantities, and calibrated dye fluorescence concentrations. These observations enable direct estimation of upwelling rates, diapycnal diffusivity, and along-canyon spreading during an energetic internal tide event in a supercritical canyon.
