Genomic Analysis of Focal Nodular Hyperplasia with Associated Hepatocellular Carcinoma Unveils its Malignant Potential

Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) is defined as a benign tumor of the liver without malignant potential. In this study, we reported a 74-year-old female patient with an FNH and associated concomitant hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Immunophenotypic and genomic analyses revealed that FNH may be composed of multiple clones at diagnosis, that are likely to progress to HCC through clonal selection and/or the acquisition of additional genetic events. This report suggests that FNH may possess the capability to undergo a malignant transformation, bringing into evidence the potential progress to HCC of this lesion in very rare cases.EGA study EGAS00001005313
