Malaysian Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates causing invasive infections in children

Invasive S. pneumoniae from children less than five years old are given priority because these infections contribute the highest level of mortality in the world. The purpose of this study was to do whole genome sequencing (WGS) on invasive pneumococcal isolates from children less than 5 years old collected between 2014 to 2020 with the aim of studying their resistance genes and molecular epidemiology in a global context. The focus of this research is to provide a comprehensive picture of the pneumococcal serotype distribution, evolution, transmission, antimicrobial resistance and virulence factor genes of Streptococcus pneumoniae among children less than 5 years old in Malaysia.
