Perceived Family Support and Undernutrition among Older Outpatients of a Northern Nigerian Hospital

A mixed-methods study among 145 older adults in Kano found a 15.2% prevalence of undernutrition and 36.6% prevalence of poor family support. Undernutrition was strongly associated with age ≥75 years (aOR=22.59) and poor family support (aOR=9.31). Qualitative findings highlighted poor family interaction, financial hardship, and limited food variety as key contributors. Strengthening family support networks is critical to improving nutrition and health outcomes among older adults.
