The data in the present study include a survey administered electronically, in two languages (French and English), to operagoers of the National Opera of Lyon in France. Established in 1831, the National Opera of Lyon is emblematic of contemporary architecture and has a seating capacity of 1100 seats (Agid & Tarondeau, 2010). It offers more than 100 operas and 60 ballets per year. It has a budget of €38 million and sold 102,000 tickets in the 2019/20 season for a turnover of €3,730,000 (59% of which was for the opera). The links to the questionnaires were sent by email by the National Opera of Lyon. Data collection followed ethical issues of voluntary participation, informed consent, anonymity, confidentiality potential for harm and the communication of results. Finally, we collected 149 responses (see sample description in Table 1). The respondents are predominantly older and highly educated, as is the case of the ‘in-situ’ opera audience (Agid & Tarondeau, 2010). They are also mostly opera house customers: 51.70% attended from 1 to 5 operas per year at the opera house and 44.90% attended more than 6 operas.
