Markets, Minds, and Regimes: How Education and Civic Awareness Moderate Authoritarian Backlash from Global Market Expansion

This dataset supports the replication of the study Markets, Minds, and Regimes: How Education and Civic Awareness Moderate Authoritarian Backlash from Global Market Expansion, which investigates how civic capacity moderates the relationship between market liberalization and regime outcomes. Specifically, the study explores the democratic consequences of liberalizing reforms through the lenses of Karl Polanyi’s double movement, Hernando de Soto’s exclusionary market architecture, and contemporary voter restriction efforts such as Project 2025 in the United States. The package includes: vdem_from_1985.csv – Annual country-level data from the V-Dem Version 12 dataset (1990–2022) with indicators for participatory, deliberative, polyarchic, and liberal democracy. p5v2018.xls – Polity5 dataset from the Center for Systemic Peace (covering 1800–2018), including the polity2 regime score used to measure authoritarian-democratic transitions. CODE.docx – Python code (compatible with Google Colab) to fully replicate all empirical models: OLS regressions, robustness tests, VIF diagnostics, and regional subgroup analyses. Readme.docx – Replication instructions. To reproduce all analyses, simply upload the two datasets into a Google Colab notebook and paste the code into a new cell. If any output or syntax issues arise, users are encouraged to use ChatGPT or another AI tool to debug. All analyses rely on publicly available datasets, and the code is fully transparent and documented to support replicability and open science.
