According to the World Health Organization, diarrhoeal disease is the second leading cause of death in children under five years old. Since some Escherichia coli pathotypes are capable of causing typical cases of diarrhea, hemorrhagic colitis and dysentery are considered the major bacterial etiological agent causing diarrhea worldwide. The objectives of this study were identifying the virulence factors responsible of its capacity to cause disease and the resistance determinants present on the genome of this bacteria.
