In the case of a device arranged on a carrier for inserting dowels into pre-drilled workpieces， a setting head (6) protruding from the carrier (2) is provided towards the workpiece (5)， which is provided with a receptacle (27) for an inserted dowel and a guide ( 16) for inserting the dowel into the bore of the workpiece (5) and in which the head (6) has a rear opening in alignment with the guide (16)， which is penetrated by a piston or a plunger (7) of a cylinder (10) connected to the piston.
