Dust Mask was one of important safety equipments for miners. As the name suggests, it protected the miners' lungs from dust during coal mining process. This was a very essential part of their uniform because breathing in coal dust can cause black lung. All miners were supposedly to have this before they went down to their working location. However, miners most of the time chose not to wear this mask due to the high temperature underground. They felt that wearing this mask could only make it uncomfortable for them to breath.
