Acidomyces

In a study on the diversity of acidotolerant and acidophilic fungi in Vietnam, from plant residues and tissues, 38 strains of <i>Acidomyces</i> were obtained using selective isolation on MEA containing 1 % sulfuric acid. Identification by ITS sequencing indicated that 23 strains belong to <i>A. acidothermus </i>and five strains to <i>A. acidophilus</i>. Two novel <i>Acidomyces</i> species were found and assigned as <i>A. paludis</i> (two strains) and <i>A. ducanhii</i> (eight strains). <i>Acidomyces ducanhii </i>differs from <i>A. paludis</i> by 12/513 (2 %) positions in ITS, 4/1 322 (0 %) in LSU, 39/980 (4 %) in <i>tef1</i>, and 54/1 062 (5 %) in <i>rpb2</i>. Both species are acidophilic but differ from each other in the level of acid tolerance, micromorphology, and culture morphology. <i>Acidomyces ducanhii</i> has the slowest growth rate and least level of acid tolerance among <i>Acidomyces</i> spp.
