Nella Dan 1985-86 Voyage 5 Underway Data

This dataset contains bathymetry (water depth), ship's heading, ship's speed and position data collected during the Nella Dan Voyage 5 1985-86. This voyage visited Davis, Mawson, Casey and Edgeworth David, as well as carrying out marine science research in Prydz Bay. Data are available online via the Australian Antarctic Division Data Centre web page (see Related URL below). Voyage Goals1) To depot the Bunger Hills field party at the Shackleton Ice Shelf and transport personnel and necessary supplies to Edgeworth-David or the inland edge of the ice shelf as required.2) To transfer passengers to and from Casey, Davis, and Mawson stations in accordance with the passenger list.3) To transfer cargo to Mawson as a major goal, and to Davis and Casey as may be necessary.4) To recover RTA cargo from Mawson and other stations as may be available during their respective discharge operations; to recover German ecologist's cargo from Casey for onward shipment to European destinations on Nella Dan.5) To transfer approximately 300,000 lts of SAB at Mawson.6) To support a helicopter visit to Scullin Monolith preferably from Mawson, but alternatively from the Nella Dan for the purposes of bird marking, etc.7) To recover and redeploy, as part of an oceanography program, tide and current meters from the Prydz Bay and Mawson areas.8) To deploy Bureau of Meteorology Buoys enroute to the Shackleton Ice Shelf from Hobart.9) To undertake brief beam and surface trawls at current meter mooring sites, time and weather conditions permitting.10) If suitable opportunity permits, undertake mapping of fronts of Amery Ice Shelf, Shackleton Ice Shelf, and Denman Glacier.Goals 1 to 9 were achieved, but due to lack of suitable opportunity and time, goal 10 was not. In addition, passengers and cargo were transferred from Icebord Voyage 6 for delivery to Mawson, and a field camp was established from the ship at Larsemann Hills, south of Davis, and retrieved.
