Dataset supporting "Limitations of Medical X-ray Computed Tomography for Estimating Ice Content in Permafrost Samples"

This dataset supports the publication “Limitations of Medical X-ray Computed Tomography for Estimating Ice Content in Permafrost Samples” (Roustaei et al., 2025) submitted to The Cryosphere. The dataset includes 261 records from permafrost cores collected in Nunavut (Bylot Island) and Yukon (Beaver Creek). Each record contains paired laboratory-measured and CT-derived volumetric ice content values, along with site information and selected metadata (e.g., organic matter classification, scan parameters). CT scans were acquired using a Siemens SOMATOM Sensation 64 medical CT scanner at INRS (Quebec City) with voxel resolutions of 0.18–0.24 mm (x–y) and 0.4–0.6 mm (z). Image segmentation was performed in Dragonfly v2020.2 using published Hounsfield Unit (HU) ranges for gas (–1024 to –321), ice (–320 to 560), and sediment (561 to 3071). Laboratory volumetric ice contents were derived from frozen and oven-dried mass and volume measurements using the water-displacement method. The dataset does not include raw CT imagery due to file size and storage constraints but provides all processed values used in the analysis and figures of the associated paper.
