The goal of this study was to characterize the first three high level azithromycin resistance Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates from Baltimore, Maryland, USA and describe the evolution of global high level azithromycin resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Whole genome sequencing was performed on 30 Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates with and without resistance. High level azithromycin resistance Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates from Baltimore identified as multi-locus sequencing typing (MLST) sequence type (ST) 9363, which is increasing in global frequency and is associated with sustained transmission events.
