Pop5 was isolated from a Phaseolus vulgaris nitrogen fixing nodule recovered from acid soils in Los Tuxtlas, Mexico, where P. vulgaris was introduced several thousand years ago. It is the type strain of a novel Rhizobium species not yet published (R. popolucae). Strain and source DNA is available from Dr. Esperanza Martinez-Romero (emartine@ccg.unam.mx) at the Center for Genomic Sciences, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico.
