Seismic profile survey of McMurdo Sound and Terra Nova Bay

As part of the Dry Valleys Drilling Project, the area of the McMurdo Sound drill hole was surveyed with a seismic survey profile and extended to cover the whole of the McMurdo Sound region to determine the stratigraphy of the drill core to be extended laterally. The main objective was to collect further information on the structure and thickness of sediment in McMurdo Sound. 1000km of seismic profile track was completed in the Terra Nova Bay region as far south as Beaufort Island and a further 1000km of seismic profile records were obtained from McMurdo Sound. The results were to be used to determined the best sites for the Dry Valley Drilling Project to drill, as well as providing a means of tracing stratigraphic horizons away from the drill sites using the seismic reflection profiles. In addition, it should be possible to interpret the geological history and climate of the Ross Sea region of Antarctica for the past 100 million years.
