This dataset includes 381145 files of recipients of the Légion dHonneur - the highest French order of merit - who died before 1977. These files have been digitized to create the Léonore database and were scraped by Benoît de Courson due to the absence of a data dump. For almost all individuals, the dataset contains gender, name, first name, date and place of birth. It also includes rich geographical information such as municipality geographic coordinates and INSEE codes. For 5% of the sample, presumably the most famous individuals, much richer information is available, including date and place of death, occupations, a Wikidata link, and whether the person is Mort pour la France. The dataset also contains many other variables that have not been explored. A note of caution is that some files appear to be missing.
