Assignment: Investigation of Norwalk 2-plane collision. 32 and 33: Group of investigators (background) looking at debris from cockpit section of P2V (foreground) and same plane's fuselage (background, right) L to R: Frank G. Andrews; Harry H. Hurt; Colonel George W. Kinney; James C. Nielsen; Captain Charles L. Westhofen; Lieutenant Commander Wade R. Bascom. 42 and 43: Candid shot investigators doing 'jigsaw puzzle' work piecing together ripped metal skin fragments of MATS transport. 34: Aerial view of assembled pieces at Los Alamitos Naval Air Research Training Center. (These two photos are related) 52: Lieutenant Commander Wade R. Bascom, crash investigator for Naval Aviation Safety Center, Norfolk, Virginia, touches with finger 'one of the best clues' found among the 30,000 pieces of debris. Clue is paint transfer which marked left jet engine of P2V with aluminum paint from rudder of MATS C118. Marking shows 'pinking shears' edge of fabric, existing only on C118 rudder. 53: For extreme closeup, Bascom's hand holding sample of fabric from C118 rudder, edged by zig-zag 'pinking shears' cut (This to illustrate how facts are learned from debris)".
