Our previous study results indicated that CCA treatment can significantly increase the levels of Hb and HbA (a2ß2) without affecting the level of serum ferritin (SF) [6]. These observations raised the question whether CCA improves anemia mainly through induction of ß-globin chain. To address this question, we applied the high throughput transcriptome sequencing method to study the changes of transcriptome in the peripheral blood cell of pregnant women with ß-thalassemia before and after the CCA treatment. However, the transcriptome findings are inconsistent with our conjecture. These results might provide insight into the role of CCA treatment in improving anemia of pregnant women with ß-thalassemia.
