Microbial diversity of a basaltic rock aquifer and surface soil layer in Iceland

The current study analyses the groundwater microbiome of a porous basaltic rock aquifer operated as municipal water reservoir in South-West Iceland. The aim was (i) to to characterise the groundwater microbiome under different hydrological conditions and (ii) to determine the impact of high surface runoff and soil microbial intrusion on the well water microbiome in an effort to track microbial contamination in drinking water systems. The dataset includes 54 well water samples from the groundwater extraction area collected over the course of one year and 31 surface soil and vegetation samples from the extraction area.
