Bacterial populations support the unusual ecology of dunes and bog soils, but have not been investigated. This unique habitat supports diverse plant and animal species despite extremely acidic soil pH, seasonal anaerobicity and other challenges. New members of the genus Chromobacterium with insecticidal activity were isolated from microbial populations in wild and cultivated cranberry bogs in eastern Massachusetts, USA.
