Conception of Democracy in Indonesia: A Balancing Act Between Democratic Values and Prosperity [Master's thesis dataset, v1.0]

This dataset examines the relationship between democratic values, civil liberties, and public satisfaction with government performance in Indonesia, addressing a central paradox: increasing public satisfaction with governance despite documented democratic decline. The data were collected through a nationwide survey conducted in November 2023 (N = 464), targeting adult Indonesian citizens aged 18 and above. The survey employs a stratified sampling approach and captures demographic variation across regions, age groups, education levels, and income categories. The dataset operationalizes key constructs in democratic theory and governance research, including democratic values, perceived civil liberties, media trust and consumption patterns, and evaluations of government performance across policy domains. It is designed to test two core hypotheses: (1) that constraints on civil liberties and media environments shape citizens’ evaluative capacity, and (2) that selective emphasis on socio-economic performance can sustain high levels of perceived democratic satisfaction. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), with reliability and validity measures reported in the accompanying documentation. The dataset includes both raw survey responses and structured variables suitable for replication and secondary analysis. This dataset is suitable for research on democratic legitimacy, governance perception, and political behavior in Southeast Asia, and may support comparative studies on instrumental versus normative conceptions of democracy.
