Rhodococcus erythropolis TG-1. Toluene-degrading bacteria are widespread in the environment, contribute to toluene degradation and improvement on air quality. Metal ions could significantly improve the degradation efficiency of toluene, but mechanisms of metal ions on bacteria are rarely investigated and not fully understood. To gain insights into the metabolism of metal ions on toluene-degrading bacteria TG-1, this manuscript performed surface characteristics and the expression levels of catabolic genes of TG-1 in the present of metal ions. This work demonstrates that metal ions enhanced the toluene degradation ability of TG-1 by promoting cell surface hydrophobicity, emulsification activity and influencing the expression levels of catabolic genes. These findings serve as foundation for our understanding of mechanisms of metal ions on toluene-degrading bacteria.
