Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), including Mycobacterium terrae complex, are environmentally-transmitted pathogens of great concern for human and animal health. A newly-described species of M. terrae complex, namely M. virginiense, has been very recently recognized as an etiological agent of clinical importance. M. virginiense was first described in 2016 on the basis of three independent clinical strains, and the major cause of tenosynovitis and osteomyelitis in the United States. Here, we report a single isolate of M. virginiense isolated from a mud sample of a local pig farm in Tokai area, Japan where an outbreak of swine mycobacteriosis occurred.
